Liter Cube

A cubic decimeter/cubic centimeter block illustrates the squaring and cubing of linear conversion factors.

Curriculum Notes

This demo is usually used when derived units are being discussed at the beginning of an intro chemistry course. Allow about 5 minutes for this demo.

Lead Time
One day of lead time is required for this project.
Discussion

Linear conversion factors are squared for area conversions and cubed for volume conversions.

Materials

Liter Cube

Procedure

Use the block to show that there are 100 square centimeters in a square decimeter and 1000 cubic centimeters in a cubic decimeter. The Liter Cube can be passed around the classroom.

Safety Precautions

Choking hazard for small children.
